Summer in Salina, the green jewel of the Aeolian archipelago, is not only about crystal-clear waters, fiery sunsets, and panoramic trails. It is also a season filled with events, festivals, traditional celebrations, and moments of joy that bring life to the island’s villages. From gastronomy to music, from popular devotion to cinema, each month offers unique experiences to be enjoyed with curiosity and an open heart.
One of the most anticipated cultural events of the summer is the Marefestival – Premio Troisi, held every year in mid-June. This festival celebrates cinema and culture through screenings, meetings, debates, and live music, often featuring well-known artists and filmmakers, all set against Salina’s Mediterranean scenery.
Gastronomy takes center stage with the Festa del Cappero, celebrating the island’s symbolic product. In the small square of Sant’Onofrio in Pollara, caper-based dishes are prepared and served alongside local wines and music.
In recent years, the festival has been on pause, and we are all eagerly awaiting its return. Write to info@lalocandadelpostino.it for updated information.
On June 12, Pollara celebrates its patron saint, Sant’Onofrio, with a small, deeply traditional local festival offering an authentic glimpse into village life. After a religious service, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the village, accompanied by the Salina band and the local community. Upon returning to the square, residents share food and wine, and the evening continues with traditional music and group dancing in a joyful, intimate atmosphere.
In mid-July, Santa Marina Salina celebrates its patron saint with solemn masses, sea processions with decorated boats, concerts, and fireworks. This is also the occasion of the famous “ntinna a mari”, a traditional game in which a greased wooden beam extends over the sea at the harbor. Locals and visitors compete to reach the flag at the end—an exciting and much-loved event.
Held in July, SalinaDocFest brings international documentaries, screenings, meetings with directors, book presentations, and tastings to the island. Dedicated to narrative documentary cinema, the festival blends culture, film, and Mediterranean landscapes.
August is the month of traditional festivities. Events include the Feast of San Lorenzo in Malfa, folk festivals, food events, live music, and fireworks. Ferragosto (August 15) fills the island with celebrations, concerts, and entertainment.
A rare and evocative musical event, Unda Maris is dedicated to Salina’s historic organs, with concerts held in churches in a highly atmospheric setting.
At the beginning of September, Salina hosts the Festival of Aeolians Around the World, celebrating emigration and the global Aeolian diaspora through music, meetings, and cultural events.
Beyond these major events, summer in Salina also features concerts, evening performances, artisan markets, book presentations, and family activities. Ask our reception desk to stay updated.
